Celebrations for Eid Al Adha will begin August 21st of this year, with most public and private sector companies enjoying a few days off. A time of joy and celebration, here is what you need to know about the occasion:

What is Eid Al Adha?

The festival of sacrifice is the second major occasion in Islam, with the first being Eid Al Fitir. Celebrated by Muslims all over the world, it is also dependent on the sighting of the moon in the lunar month of Zul Hijjah.

How is it Celebrated?

Eid starts with a special prayer that proceeds morning prayer at mosques. Eid Al Adha is also the time of Haj pilgrimage, which is a very important pillar in Islam. The Muslim community worldwide partake in sacrificing animals and enjoying a feast, as well as giving to the needy and poor. It is also a time of celebration for children and families, who all get together and spend the Eid days visiting relatives and friends. People are usually dressed in their traditional clothes, and children specifically enjoy this time, as most people give them money and gifts!
